Sidewalks

To promote pedestrian friendly neighborhoods and streets, the city invests in improving and maintaining the city’s sidewalk infrastructure on an on-going basis, as funding is available.

In addition to planned improvements and general maintenance, development standards exist to ensure pedestrian transportation is installed when new development occurs.

Property owners are a key component of pedestrian safety and the curb appeal of our city through sidewalk and boulevard maintenance.

Sidewalk Installation & Repair Program

Our Sidewalk Installation and Repair programs (Pedestrian Transportation programs) provide for:

  • A 50/50 cost share with residents whose public sidewalk(s) have been determined hazardous and require replacement.
  • Repair and replacement of sidewalks adjacent to city property.
  • Installation of new sidewalks where none exist. Sidewalk locations selected for new installation are determined based on assessment of the location(s), citizen and elected official requests.

Sidewalks in New Construction

Construction and zoning ordinances are in place to ensure the city’s transportation network grows with new development. The regulations:

  • Require the installation of sidewalks and ADA curb ramps with all new construction where pedestrian connections do not exist*.
  • Require the installation of sidewalks and ADA curb ramps in new subdivisions to ensure pedestrian access.

*While installation of sidewalks is required, on occasion developers do seek waiver of this requirement.  Waiving the sidewalk requirement is a City Council decision.

Sidewalk Installation & Repair Regulations

Sidewalks installation and repair requires:

Work can not begin until all necessary documents are filed and permit application is approved.

Construction must meet the requirements of City of Davenport Standard Engineering Specifications.

Homeowner’s may replace up to two (2) sidewalk slabs on their own with the required permit, Homeowner’s Bond, and inspection.
